Projects
The public areas and furniture of the 'kept' environment of our Community are the responsibility of the City Council. We report on a range of small to major projects which are noted in our minutes. All projects that may be of significant interest to our local area will be listed in this section.
The South West Neighbourhood Transport Sub-Group, of which we attend, have continued discussions (primarily with Lothian Buses) about the possibility of re-instating a Number 20 Bus service. It was our intention that this bus service would visit Hermiston Gait AND the Health Centres (both Whinpark, and Sighthill, Health Centres). Edinburgh Council took the decision to amend the Number 20 bus service so that it now doesn't pass through Stenhouse, Saughton Mains or Whitson. Neither does this revised bus service visit Whinpark, or Sighthill, Health Centres. We later found out that the Number 2 bus service was also to be amended so as to visit Hermiston Gait. Unfortunately, this route was not amended to visit Whinpark, or Sighthill, Health Centres. HOWEVER, we have proposed a compromise to the Number 2 bus service and the Convenor of Edinburgh Council's "Transport, Infrastructure, and Environment Committee" (TIE), has agreed to write to Lothian Buses in support. Official opening of the Skatepark took place on a sunny Saturday 8th May 2010, with hundreds turning out to enjoy it. The opening ribbon was cut by Councillor Deidre Brock, Convenor, Culture and Leisure Committee. There were demonstrations by very experienced skateboarders and BMX-ers, as well as an impressive display from the guys from 'Clan' including Danny Macaskill who provided a mountain bike demo with their own ramps. The skatepark site is located to the east of the existing play area next to Balgreen Road. An outdoor skatepark has been long sought after by Edinburgh’s young people and the development of a facility has been part of the Youngedinburgh Action Plan since 2001. Edinburgh Skatepark Project (ESP) was established in 2001 to represent Edinburgh’s skaters and campaign for skate facilities in the city.
Renowned Skatepark designer Dave Sowerby, who designed the new indoor facility at Ocean Terminal, has been involved in the Saughton project. Saughton Park also has several grass football pitches, an enclosed running track, a play area and a new all weather ‘third generation’ full size pitch and sevens area. Downloads
The Reserve Forces And Cadets Association (287 Squadron) have relocated to the former Stenhouse and Whitson Community Centre, at 80 Stevenson Drive. The Reserve Forces And Cadets Association's existing building (114 Stenhouse Drive) has now also been demolished and work on the trams is currently underway in this area.
For more information: www.edinburghtrams.com Many of you will have noted an increase in the works taking place along Bankhead, Broomhouse and Stenhouse Drives along with the closure of the guided bus lane that runs along this route. This is in connection with the installation of facilities for the new tram system. Tram Safety Programme starts in Edinburgh Primary Schools Our Community Beat Office, PC Neil Doig, has notified us of concerns raised by some residents in both Broomhouse and Saughton Mains with regard to parking and road safety issues associated with the tram works as they progress. Do you have a concern? - please let us know. Route Map
